Your Labour Councillors

Martin Straker-Welds

First elected to the Council in 2011, Martin’s background is in education management. A resident of Moseley for twenty five years, Martin is active locally in the Labour Party and with local schools and organizations like the Highbury Trust. He chairs the ward’s ‘Cleaner, Greener Environment Group’. He’s an LA Governor of Wheelers Lane Primary School, a Trustee of Midlands Arts and the National Centre for Conductive Education.

Martin says, ‘Our future belongs to children, young people and families. I want schools to be at the heart of their communities. I also enjoy powerful community action to improve our neighbourhoods. Before my election, I pledged to fight to protect your local services, to promote a caring community and to bring council services closer to our communities. I now support Labour’s programme of local budgets and local neighbourhood management.’

Martin has been an active campaigner for safer speed zones around schools. He also campaigned to safeguard community assets like allotments
and Holders Lane Playing Fields. He now works closely with residents’ associations to get quality street lights, pavements and carriageways on your
streets.

Martin is kept busy through his regular advice bureaux. Since May, he has been appointed to two council committees: Education & Vulnerable Children
and Planning.
